Interrail 2018 Days 14, 15 and 16: More trains in Hamburg and a winter wonderland in Austria

Day 14:

We only had one day in Hamburg. At 21:20 that evening our night train left for Austria.

We decided to go to the food court in the Europapassage mall again for breakfast. There, we looked up things to do in Hamburg and decided to go to the Miniatur Wunderland, a model train museum. It took us 20 minutes to walk there and we really enjoyed seeing more of Hamburg.

To be honest, I had some doubts about the museum but it turned out to be amazing and quite spectacular! The amount of detail and precision was breathtaking! There were a lot of people but nevertheless, we really enjoyed it and definitely recommend it. We spent about 3 hours in the museum. At about 18:00 we walked back to the mall and did some shopping and then, of course, went to the food court for dinner.

The night train was quite an adventure. The cabin we had was very small and with our two big suitcases, we barely had a spot on the floor to stand. But looking back it actually was quite fun.

Day 15:

We woke up at about 5:30. Our night train would arrive in Linz an hour later. Something we didn’t reckon with is that we even got breakfast included on our train.  It wasn’t special, but more than we expected.

Still, on the train, we looked up connections to get to Graz, where we would meet my relatives. So in Linz, we took a train to Vienna and from there another one to Graz. The last train ride that day was beautiful! It lead through mountains and magnificent landscape! It started snowing and at one point everything was white. I had not seen so much snow for years, even though living in Switzerland.

My relatives gave us a tour of Graz and took us on the Schlossberg, a small hill in the middle of the city with a wonderful view.

Although Sarah and I were exhausted from our lack of sleep we didn’t go to bed early. We played a couple of games with my relatives and talked for quite some time. We really enjoyed visiting them! It was way after midnight until we got to bed.

Day 16:

My relatives had taken the day off and since our train back home only left at 22.30 that evening we had a whole day to spend together. We had breakfast and then hiked onto a small mountain not far from their home. It had snowed all night and Graz had turned into a winter wonderland. The walk to the summit was wonderful and the view over the city amazing!

We returned to their place and had lunch. After lunch, we all were so tired that we decided to take a nap. We napped so long that it was almost time for dinner as we woke up.

We went to an Italian restaurant, where I ate one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. And for the first time had BBQ chicken on a pizza. It was delicious!

After dinner, we returned to the house to grab our suitcases and then went straight to the train station for our last train ride on our trip back to Switzerland.

  1. I really enjoyed following your travels. Stunning photos of the winter wonderland. I’m glad you could pick up your travels again and hope that Sarah is feeling 100% now. It sounds like you had quite an experience. Thanks for sharing.
